Enough

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a host of barriers to practicing medicine from obscuring our faces to increasing patient hostility and overall frustration. In his poem, “Enough”, Dr. Jay Kaplan, past president of ACEP and a national leader in physician wellness, examines this loss of connection and how we can fight back by spreading compassion and hope.

Enough

By Jay Kaplan, MD

Enough

I’ve had enough

              enough fear

                             enough grief

                                           enough sadness

                                                          enough uncertainty

              maybe not enough anger

and it goes on

              and truth

there is little I can do

other than to continue to spread

what hope I can muster

what love I have in my heart

to as many people as I can

              to live with integrity

                             and gratitude

and

to consistently remind myself that

the glass is half-full

if I allow it to be so
